Astrophage. Astrofayj? Astrofagey? /ˈæstɹəˌfeɪdʒ/? I think it’s pronounced Astrofayj, which rolls right off the tongue. I tried to ask Andy Weir directly through his AMA but only got an answer from the community. However it’s pronounced, it’s just amazing he came up with the word and idea in general.

The premise of the book is that this Astrophage is basically munching on the Sun and causing it to dim which would pretty much kill all life on Earth. Fan-damn-tastic premise and it’s so original, or is it…just kidding. I think.

The internet is a strange place especially when you’re trying to attract customers or build an audience. Whether you’re throwing money at Google AdWords to get people to your website or trying to build a social media presence, you’ll run into some things that just make you say…”wut?”

I have an engineering services company and I throw money at Google AdWords to attract potential customers to my site. My site is set up so they need to fill out the contact form to get ahold of me and I’ve done my best to prevent spam from coming through using reCAPTCHA.

I’m writing this blog post sitting outside of my favorite sandwich shop on my 9 year old Macbook Air. I’m outside because it’s 90 degrees and breezy and not 105 degrees and oven-like. Problem is, my battery is almost dead because the battery has lost its luster over the past 9 years and there isn’t a plug in sight.

Much like a lot of the “planned obsolescent” devices that are sold today, there is no easy way to replace the battery. …

I’ve used drill bits before but until this moment, I never came across a step bit. I chucked it up in the drill press and I marked with tape where I needed to stop drilling on the bit itself to get a half inch hole.

I flicked on the drill press, held my metal enclosure in place and started drilling. …

In the 1997 movie, Contact, starring Jodie Foster, there is a line in the movie that I always think about when it comes to manufacturing a product; [Spoiler Alert] “First rule in government spending: why build one when you can have two at twice the price?” It’s meant as a jab at frivolous government spending but I believe the government was right to buy themselves some redundancy. I’m sure the fictional government in this movie weighed the risks of spending twice the amount of money to build a second alien space-time travel machine. …

This is the 9th article I’ve written on Medium in 9 weeks. I force myself to do it every week because I struggle with consistency across everything I do. Writing seemed to be the lowest barrier to entry and I could just word vomit on the page. I have this cognitive dissonance where I know I want to build an audience but my brain is so sporadic that I have to force myself to focus on staying consistent enough to build that audience. How do you build a relationship with people on the internet when I’m not even that good…

I have a tattoo on my inner left forearm of the bottom layer of a circuit design that was part of a product I brought to market. I got it because it reminds me of everything it took to be able to get a hardware product to market and it’s something I’m proud to have as a permanent reminder.

Never have I ever been captivated, inspired, entertained, and shocked all at the same time. A friend on Facebook shared a video of Marc Rebillet’s video, Vaccinated Attitude, and I couldn’t look away since.

The creativity that pours out of this man’s soul is something to behold. He makes up songs on the spot on his keyboard and looping set up and he transverses the entire musical spectrum from soul, to funk, to talking about buttholes. He is the embodiment of not giving a fuck and just starting and seeing where it goes.

I’ve watched several of his live…

In 2018, I was on a 30 hour flight from Florida to Viet Nam and I had exhausted all the movie options in the first third of the trip. With 20 hours left to go, I needed something to occupy my mind, something that I normally wouldn’t put as high priority. I started thinking about organization. Not tidying up my workspace or redoing a closet at home, but organizing my digital file system.

My profession requires me to work with files and folders 90% of time. PDFs, XLSXs, DWGs, PSDs, STEPs, SCHs, PCBs, DIPs, just to name a few. After…

I was on the cross country team in high school for a short period of time. I was pretty busy with other extracurricular activities and school and one of the only reasons I joined was because there was a girl I was interested in on the girl’s cross country team. I was on the team long enough to race in my first and only race and at least got the team t-shirt. The shirt had the greatest slogan, “Our sport is your sport’s punishment.” It’s a known fact that a lot of people hate running and coaches have used it…
